Race Start to Pine Canyon SEgment #1 (Aid Station #1)

The start of the race heads up Pine Canyon along the side of Milk Ranch point overlooking the town to Pine, Arizona.  It winds it way up the canyon before entering the canyon and it's huge Ponderosa pines, fern covered trails and switchbacks up to the aid station at a little over 8 miles.

Pine Canyon AS to Dickerson Flat Section #2 (Aid Station #2)

After leaving the Pine Canyon Aid Station you will head out on the General Crook Trail, barely even a trail for a short section before it turns into double track through the forest.  Upon reaching the forest roads runners head to the right and then again right again on Milk Ranch Road until reaching the Aid Station for Dickerson Flat after about 5 miles of generally flat or downhill running along double track or forest road.

Dickerson Flat to Geronimo Section #3 (Aid Station #3)

Runners leave Dickerson Flat aid station and immediately enter the Turkey Springs Trail.  This trail starts off with a gentle uphill until it crests at the very edge of the Mogollon Rim.  Here runners will get their first view of the Rim itself as it looks out across the entire valley for over 50 miles.  Right away Turkey Springs drops off the cliff in a very steep and rugged descent that gradually opens up into the forest and levels out all the way down to where it merges with the Highline Trail #31.  After a short stint on the Highline Trail runners will cross Webber Creek to the Geronimo Aid Station, totaling about 18 total miles at this point in the race.

Geronmo to Washington Park Segment #4 (Aid Station #4)

Geronimo Aid Station to Washington Park is all on the historic Highline Trail which for this segment doubles as the Arizona Trail as well.  This section is rugged, rocky and for sections can be exposed to the heat.  Short up's and downs take their tolls on runners and any entrants having run the Zane Grey 50 Miler have experienced this section.  After about nine miles runners reach Washington Park Aid Station. (Please note my mapping software states 8 miles and change with the attached map below.  My Garmin reads closer to 9.5 each time.  With all the up's and down's along this section it's likely the reason for the consistent inconsistencies in this area.  I'd lean closer to the 9.5 miles estimate)

Washington Park to Houston Brothers Segment #5 (Aid Station #5)

Washington Park is the Race Headquarters and runners will be reaching this aid station at mile 26.77 (this visit), mile 50 and mile 85.  Washington Park is along the Highline Trail and also is where the Arizona Trail turns north up the Rim.  This is where runners will leave the aid station and climb two miles to the top of the Rim for the 2nd of the four trips to the top.  At the top of the Rim a short reprieve awaits with 4.5 miles of forest road that connects to the Cabin Loop trail network and the Houston Brothers Aid Station.  The forest road hugs the sheer cliff for much of the 4.5 miles and views of the surrounding area go on seemingly forever.  While a great opportunity to put in some faster miles on the road, you'll surely be stopping to take it in.

Houston Brothers Trail to Pinchot Cabin Section #6 (Aid Station #6)

Finishing up the short forest road section runners reach the Houston Brothers Aid Station at the edge of the forest.  This trail starts the Cabin Loop experience for runners with a 7.5 mile stretch of fast, fun, single track through the forest, mountain meadows, following streams under the Ponderosa's.  Runner's pass by two old Pioneer cabin's before reaching the aid station for Pinchot Cabin, the northern most point of the course.

Pinchot Cabin to Washington Park Aid SECTION #7 (Aid Station #7)

Pinchot Cabin aid station heads west for a brief 1/4 mile of road before starting the Fred Haught Trail south back towards Washington Park.  This trail is through the forest as the Houston Brothers Trail was and heads along the riverside much of the way, some extremely fun single track, beautiful in day or night.  This trail ends at the General Springs Cabin and a half mile later you will find yourself back at the top of the Rim on the Rim Road #300 where you started several hours before after climbing out of Washington Park.  You'll descend now the two miles of rocky, rugged terrain and return to the aid station at Washington Park for the 2nd time.

Washington Park to Hells Gate Section #8 (Aid Station #8)

After leaving Washington Park for the 2nd time runners head east along the Highline Trail towards the Hell's Gate Aid Station.  This section also mirrors a section of the Zane Grey 50M except that was done during the day and with only 17 miles on runners legs.  For the Monster you'll have 50 miles and it will almost assuredly be dark when you start this section.  The trail is difficult, notorious for it's overgrowth and erosion along the trail.  While much trail work has been done in 2012 for this section it remains very arduous, undulating, relentless and will likely be one of the tougher sections of the race.  This portion continues for over five miles before reaching the remote Hell's Gate Aid Station.  Please don't drop at this aid station.  It is very difficult to get people out of there in anything close to a timely manner.

Hell's Gate to Buck Springs Section #9 (Aid Station #9)

Hell's Gate sits at the belly of the Rim as does much of the Highline Trail, sitting beneath it you start your trip east another two miles to the turnoff north up the Rim along the Myrtle Trail.  The Myrtle Trail is only 1.0 miles but it takes a great deal of effort.  The trail is extremely rugged, switchbacks very little over the 1100 feet of up and skirts the edge of the Rim at nearly ever step of the way.  Pay attention to the trail, we will have it marked with high intensity reflector tape to easily be picked up with headlamps but the terrain is still challenging with the nature of the Rim itself.  It's a 2,000 foot cliff and you're climbing it!

Good news is that is the 3rd of the 4 climbs up the Rim.  After reaching the top there are a few miles of forest road, gentle up's and downs before reaching the Buck Springs Aid Station on the edge of the forest.

Buck Springs to Pinchot Cabin Section #10 (Aid Station #10)

From Buck Springs you'll head back into the forest, the most ominous and least visited portion of the Cabin Loop trail system.  You'll head north with the ultimate goal of returning to the Pinchot Aid Station.  The trail takes you along ridges, past Dane Spring (water 2 miles after leaving Buck Springs) and down some beautiful mountain canyons, and a few creek crossings.

Pinchot Cabin to Houston Brothers Section #11 (Aid Station #11)

This will be your second trip and final trip to Pinchot Cabin and you'll now head south on the Houston Brothers Trail that you previously in the day ran north to Pinchot Cabin.  It's just as fun heading south but as the Rim is at about 600 feet higher than the interior it's a gradual uphill...

Houston Brothers to Washington Park #12 (Aid Station #12)

Once you break out of the forest back onto the Rim Road #300 and the Houston Brothers Aid Station you'll return on a familiar route along the Rim 4.5 miles back to the Washington Park descent down the Rim.  You'll likely now be running during the daylight so you'll again have the views all along the Rim while on the Rim Road and descending.

Washington Park to Geronimo Section #13 (Aid Station #13)

Say your goodbyes, you're not coming back to Washington Park Aid Station after three trips through here and instead are on your final stretch back to the Finish!  With 85 miles and over 15,000 feet of extremely tough feet of climbing only two major sections remain.  This section is the return of the Geronimo to Washington Park (Section #4).  It's tough, challenging and not the fastest section.  Hold in there, you're almost done!

Geronimo to 100 Mile Aid Station To Pine Trailhead Section #14 (Aid Station #14 & #15)

You're at the 3rd to the last aid station.  It's almost 95 miles into the race and you are now going to climb up the Rim one final time.  Prepare the emails to the RD now...

Leaving Geronimo you'll head into the forest and back up the direction you came down when descending Turkey Springs.  You passed the West Webber Trail intersection on the way down and now will go left up West Webber Trail.  This is a tough climb back up the Rim in a little under 2 miles.  You'll pass through some great foliage, good tree cover and reach the Rim soon enough but not before undoubtably stopping to catch what just might be...the best view of the entire course.  After cresting the Rim you'll be going LEFT on the forest road to the turnoff for the Donahue Trail.  This is 100.00 miles.

Most races have the finish line at mile 100.00 but we have an aid station.  It'll be minimal but very helpful in breaking up the long last stretch before dropping down off the Rim the final time to the final aid station.  Leaving the 100 Mile Aid Station you'll jump on the Donahue Trail for the descent.

The Donahue Trail is challenging (big surprise I know) but is nearly all downhill.  It's under 2 miles with 1 mile all downhill making a quick, steep descent to where it merges with the Highline Trail one final time.

Taking a right on the Highline Trail you'll descend two miles to what was the start of your day, likely quite some time ago.  We'll have a final aid station for you here but really...it's only 2 miles to go.  So keep running!!

Pine Trailhead to Final Section #15 (Finish Line Aid Station #16)

After leaving the Pine Trailhead Aid station you're almost done and heading under the 87 through a tunnel you'll come out on a series of backroads that lead into the town of Pine, Arizona.  We're directing you just a mile running parallel to the 87 before you pop out a 1/4 mile from the center of town.  You'll run straight on into town, past the Sidewinder Saloon, Ponderosa Market before finishing on a side road off the main road.  If you made it this far you'll have earned the food we'll have waiting for you.  The race director has never finished a race, of any distance, in anything but a full sprint.  There is alway's more gas in the tank. Let's see what you've got that last stretch!
